Abstract
A new human coronavirus called SARS-CoV-2 first appeared in Wuhan, China at the end of 2019 and has since caused a global pandemic. The new SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus is the pathogen of COVID-19: an infectious disease caused by this new coronavirus. The disease causes respiratory complaints (as with the flu) with symptoms such as coughing, fever and (in more serious cases) respiratory problems.

The authorities together with the relevant official bodies advise you to protect yourself by regularly washing your hands, not touching your face and avoiding close contact (within 1.5 metres) with people who have symptoms of the disease.

Infection route: Human-to-human transmission via direct droplet infection (coughing and sneezing), indirect transmission via surfaces (door handles etc.) and transmission by airborne coronaviruses, particularly indoors through so-called aerosols.

Aerosols are small solid or liquid particles floating in the air.

The indoor environment has become the typical dwelling place for modern man. Often up to 90 per cent of the time is spent here. A human being breathes in and out an average of 18 to 24,000 times a day. This means that an adult of average size breathes in about 20 cubic metres of air. This air volume corresponds to a weight of approximately 25 kilograms. This greatly exceeds the amount of food and drinking water consumed each day. While food and water can be carefully selected, this is generally not possible with the air we breathe. Many studies have shown that indoor air is often 2 to 5 to even 100 times more polluted than outdoor air. The EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) - the agency for environmental protection in the United States - concluded after research that there are more concerns about air pollution indoors than outdoors.

The coronavirus spreads rapidly all over the world and chooses as its main route of infection the indoor environment: the typical abode of modern man. As a result, the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus as a pathogen of the infectious disease COVID-19 can be added to the long list of threats to our health due to the poor quality of air in our homes, offices, work and treatment rooms, schools, public spaces, institutions, etc.

Like all other viruses, this new coronavirus needs a carrier (host) such as droplets, dust particles or other pathogens (biological pathogens) in the air. Pathogens can spread in different ways, e.g. through the air, causing an infection.

Viruses are DNA molecules and need a host to multiply and cannot be treated with antibiotics, but instead require a vaccine.

When people infected with COVID-19 cough, sneeze or talk indoors, microfine droplets of moisture are dispersed, so-called aerosols, which are expelled from the throat through the mouth into the indoor environment and can remain there for a longer period of time. These moisture droplets (aerosols) are carriers of SARS-CoV-2 viruses and germs and can also settle on surfaces. For this reason, it is important to maintain good hygiene by regularly washing hands, coughing and sneezing into the elbow, ventilating the indoor environment and limiting the number of people indoors.

The practice is bothersome, and not everyone will be able to adhere to it (a sneeze can also occur unexpectedly quickly), so that the corona germs end up in droplet form on surfaces and remain floating in the indoor environment in the form of aerosols for a longer period of time.

As recently shown by research (NEJM report 17/03/2020), the SARS-CoV-2 virus has a relatively long half-life of about 1 hour (the time when the concentration of the infectious virus particle decreases by half) in indoor environments, allowing infected aerosols (small solid or liquid particles) to remain suspended in indoor air for hours.

Ultraviolet sensitivity of the SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes the COVID-19 disease
SARS-CoV-2 is genetically most closely related to the SARS coronavirus that caused outbreaks in several regions of the world in 2003.

In research reports from 2004 the WHO (World Health Organization) concluded that this 2003 SARS-CoV-2 virus was inactivated by ultraviolet light (UV-C) at 254 nm, a treatment of 65 °C or higher, alkaline (pH>12) or acidic (pH<3) conditions.

Hundreds of laboratory studies have shown that ultraviolet light can destroy viruses, bacteria and fungi (Kowalski 2009). Specific tests for the SARS-CoV-2 virus have not yet been completed, but many other tests on related coronaviruses, including the SARS coronavirus, confirm that they are very sensitive to inactivation by ultraviolet light.

UV light is divided into different classifications: UV-A (320-400 nm) UV-B (280-320 nm) and UV-C (200-280 nm). UV-C energy in the range 240-280 nm is well absorbed by microorganisms. The energy of the UV-C light disturbs the DNA and prevents microorganisms such as the SARS-CoV-2 virus from dividing. Research has shown that UV-C light with a wavelength of exactly 253.7 nm achieves the best results.
